Battenhall’s 2017 in review

With Christmas rapidly approaching, and our agency's 5th birthday right around the corner, it is time to look back over the year gone by and reflect on how it all panned out.

Considering only four years ago we were a company of just one person in an empty co-space hub in Shoreditch, the last 12 months have without doubt been the most formative we've experienced to date. We've invested heavily into our infrastructure in a way that will help us to scale up in 2018, from our new and expanded Battenhall HQ, to new HR and finance systems, and two new technology products developed entirely in-house and used on almost all our clients now. We also took on 12 new team members, and many more have joined our extended team of photographers, linguists, developers and videographers. We said goodbye to some old faces too, inevitably, but that's the way things go.

From a client perspective, business has really exploded this year, in particular in the last three months. Our strategic focus from the beginning of the year has been to expand in three ways. Firstly into new markets, which this year have included The Nordics and Australasia. Secondly we focused on developing and rolling out new consultancy services, and saw in particular our design and our social insights offerings both double in scale. And lastly we looked to move into new vertical industry sectors, taking on major pieces of work in travel, luxury, and wine & spirits in particular, while expanding our financial services and technology work too. We won 34 new clients, six only in this month, three of which signed up this week. January will see us stepping up a few gears for sure.

Then we were fortunate enough to pick up a batch of new awards this year too for our agency's performance. They included Agency of the Year 2017 at the PRCA Awards and The Instagrammys, a commendation at PR Week as Best Specialist Agency, and one of the coveted Innovator 25 EMEA gongs from The Holmes Report.

When we launched Battenhall in 2013, we made it our mission to create a new specialist communications agency model for the social media age. And that, above all else, is still our focus - the model for how we work. Our investment in 20% time, the depth of social media knowledge and passion at all levels in the business, the high levels of investment in technologies and R&D, and perks designed to enable us to go that extra mile. We're not quite there just yet, but we're pretty happy with the progress we've made so far.

Since day one, we have seen social media has create a fundamental shift in how our clients need to communicate and our agency was founded to fulfil a specialist need. Now, nearly five years later, reflecting on how this year has gone and what we are looking for in the year ahead, we have some plans hatching that we hope will enable us to step things up to another level.

So however you're spending your holidays this Christmas, I hope you have a good, well-earned rest. And I hope to cross paths with you in 2018.
