Brits can now join in on the fun of quiz show app HQ Trivia

Set your calendar alerts people - it’s finally here! The massively popular iOS (and now Android!) quiz show game HQ Trivia is now available in the UK. For those in the dark, HQ Trivia has really taken off across the pond, hooking in over 15,000 participants per game. Twice a day during the week and once a day on the weekend, a live game show takes place on your phone with the chance to win a share of a cash prize by correctly answering a set of trivia questions. Brits in the know have been tuning in at unsociable hours for a chance to compete in the North American version of the game, but the new UK version promises to air at 3 pm and 9 pm GMT.

The company tested the waters a couple of weeks ago with a very quietly promoted game, but unfortunately there were no winners due to an incredibly difficult question in the 11th round. The games are just 15 minutes long with 12 multiple-choice questions, and are hosted by real television personalities to intensify the game show vibe. The main host of the UK version is NY-based Brit Sharon Carpenter, who has appeared regularly in the US game as a stand-in for the main host Scott “Quiz Daddy” Rogowsky. Yay for female leads!

It’s unclear yet how popular the game will be amongst UK audiences; however, unlike its American counterpart, the UK version of the game will feature questions about British media, politics, sport and culture. It's also expected to draw in a much smaller audience of course, which means less competition and a better chance of winning big. Co-founder Rus Yusupov stated, “You can't find a perfect time for everyone, so we're airing at times when people across the country are going to be taking a break from work or out with friends or relaxing at home with the family.” Rus Yusupov and fellow founder Colin Kroll know a thing or two about viral apps, having been part of the team behind the hugely popular video app Vine which was acquired by Twitter in 2012 before they shut it down just over a year ago. It will be interesting to see if HQ Trivia can match its American success internationally, but so far things are looking promising.
